The Greater Richmond Aquatic League (GRAL) Leonard Everett Scholarship may be awarded annually to one or more graduating high school seniors who have participated in a GRAL member club aquatics programs for no less than five consecutive years. Interested seniors are encouraged to apply. 


Character Qualities: The scholarships are awarded to swimmers who demonstrate dedication to the sport of swimming and loyalty to the athlete’s GRAL team. The scholarship winner continuously strives to make the most of his/her abilities, vigorously pursues his/her goals and dreams, and competes in a way that sets high personal and teammate standards. The scholarship winner leads by example and demonstrates that hard work and dedication may lead to new levels of personal accomplishment. The winner represents the best of what swimming is all about in the Greater Richmond Aquatic League. Winners of the scholarship will have demonstrated the following qualities, primarily through their involvement in GRAL aquatics, but also in school and community.

Selection Process: The Selection Committee bases its decision on careful consideration of the application materials submitted by the applicants. The Selection Committee determines the number and amount of scholarships annually, dependent on availability of funds and the quality of the candidate pool. 


TO APPLY: Fill out this form and please include:

  • The activities form 

  • An essay that explains what your GRAL aquatics experience means to you. The essay should be a compelling story about you, your GRAL experiences, and what those experiences mean to you, not a delineation of how you exemplify each quality. Please limit your remarks to no more than two (2) standard double-spaced pages using a font no smaller than 10-point type with 1-inch margins. 

  • Two (2) recommendations from individuals who know you well (not a parent). One may be a character reference and the other should be an individual who knows you in an aquatics context. You could consider asking a coach (past or present), team parent, the clerk of course, volunteer coordinator, or any other representative from your team who knows you well. Individuals completing recommendations should fill out this online form. Email if an alternate form is needed. Recommendations are due by July 10, 2024. 

  • Completed applications must be received no later than 11:59pm on June 28, 2024. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
